Once upon a long time ago when I lived in NY, there was a pickle place at one of the last remaining Lower East side markets (Essex Street? Delancy Street?) They also had pickles straight out of the barrel -- new, half-dill, dill. In truth, I really don't care too much for most pickles, but I loved the scene. Their barrels were far less attractive than these red ones -- and what's with the sling?

Re. sling, perhaps he sprained his wrist lifting a particularly large pickle?
