Lake Louise, Canada: The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise; restaurant review

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

111 Lake Louise Dr., Lake Louise, (866) 540-4413.  Sleigh rides mid-December through early April.

Situated within Banff National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the exquisitely positioned grand hotel on scenic Lake Louise--The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise--provides guests with pleasures galore.  Perhaps my favorite is Afternoon Tea in the Lakeview Lounge, with pastries, finger sandwiches, and a view of the lake and Victoria Glacier.  In winter, guests are picked up at the hotel for a draft horse-drawn sleigh ride along a lakeside trail featuring spectacular mountain scenery.  The one-hour excursions are available in both day and evening.  Note that you do not need to be an overnight guest to enjoy these special facilities.

Spend a night in the Ice Hotel and a day at Carnaval de Quebec in Quebec, Canada; hotel review + things to do

Spend a night in the Ice Hotel and a day at Carnaval de Quebec in Quebec, Canada

First constructed in 2001, Canada’s Ice Hotel is rebuilt every winter using 500 tons of ice and 15,000 tons of snow.  Though there are “snow” hotels in Finland and Norway, they use wood or metal in their construction.  Only this one in Quebec and another in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden, are true “ice hotels” made entirely of ice and snow. More . . .

Cochrane, Ontario, Canada: Swim with the Polar Bears at Polar Bear Habitat; things to do

1 Drury Park Rd., in Cochrane, 800-354-9948, 705-272-2327. Daily; in summer 9-5; in winter 10-4. $20, 65+ $18, 4-14 $12, Swim with the bears +$5.

Unbelievably, you can swim with the polar bears at Polar Bear Habitat. However, for safety--though cute, polar bears are among the world's most ferocious carnivores--a bullet-proof, shatterproof glass that is almost 9 centimeters thick separates human from bear.

More things to do in Canada.

More animal attractions.
