La Mesa, California: Los Tito’s; restaurant review

Los Tito’s

5257 Baltimore Dr., near Fletcher Pkwy., (619) 466-8226.  Open 24 hours.

Situated in a strip mall, tiny Los Tito's is famous for making the best rolled tacos in town.  This crispy treat comes in several varieties.  The regular version is simple and straightforward with the rolls topped with avocado sauce and shredded cheese, while the potato version finds the rolled-up tacos smothered in tasty and colorful salsa fresca.  I favor ordering one of each.

La Mesa, California: Anthony’s Fish Grotto; restaurant review

Anthony’s Fish Grotto

9530 Murray Dr./Grossmont Summit Dr., (619) 463-0368.  Sun–Thu 11am-8:30pm, F–Sat 11am-9pm.

With an elaborate entrance designed to resemble a fish grotto, this old-time restaurant has huge windows that look out on a large manmade lake with a fountain and some ducks.  The interior of Anthony's Fish Grotto is rife with shell decor, and plenty of booths make it very comfortable.  Outdoor seating is available for nice days.  It is reputed to have the best seafood in San Diego.  Lunch has some bargains, including divine fish and chips (I love the combo featuring both cod and shrimp) as well as pristine versions of other prime fish-house suspects.

La Mesa, California: Casa de Pico; restaurant review

5500 Grossmont Center Dr. #404, 619-463-3267. L-D daily; $$. Happy Hour M-F 3-7.

Formerly located in San Diego's Old Town, this popular Mexican spot features an expansive indoor room and a cozy patio area with fountain. Everyone gets excited when they see someone sipping the famous gigantic margarita—at Casa de Pico they come in three sizes—and thin, crispy chips arrive with a tasty salsa to nibble on while contemplating the extensive menu. Fish tacos and enchiladas rancheras are popular and delicious, and there are so many other choices that you might have difficulty selecting. Mariachis entertain during dinner Thursday through Sunday.
