Sites to See:Dongyuan Printing Village; Ruian City, Wenzhou, China

Dongyuan Printing Village  South, Pingyangkeng Township, RUIAN CITY.  Located near Jiuzhu Lake, a beautiful part of the Zhai Liao River scenic area, this picturesque region features nine small lakes surrounded by green hills.  The traditional technique and art of movable wood-type printing, or typesetting, originated in China via Mongolia about 800 years ago and is considered one of the four great inventions of the ancient Chinese people.  It continues to be practiced here as it was in ancient China.  Surrounding a courtyard, two renovated wood farm houses with stone and black-brick walls exhibit printing artifacts.  Fascinating live demonstrations show how letters are carved from tiny blocks, how the type is set, and how the printing is done.  The village was designated a UNESCO “Intangible Cultural Heritage” site in 2010.  This is also a noodle village, where in another area curtains of thin noodles are dried outside on poles.  When our group visited, the whole village turned out to watch the spectacle and interact.  It was delightful.

  2. I haven't been to China and didn't know typesetting originated there! Fascinating! The way they make the fine noodles would be something to see, too. Love the photos!
