Sights to See: Yelapa, Mexico

the Pie Lady of Yelapa, Mexico

Yelapa

45 min. from Puerto Vallarta by boat. $11/one-way by water taxi.

In the tiny seaside village of Yelapa donkeys cart things. It has no cars, and electricity didn’t arrive until 2001. But perhaps the town’s biggest claim to fame is pie, sold by a lady who strolls the beach balancing the pie plate on her head, stopping to serve out big wedges of banana and coconut cream to those who simply cannot resist. After disembarking the water taxi into the sea's warm water, plop in a plastic lounge chair right at the water’s edge and settle in for a few hours of watching the amazing show unfold in front of you—-a local man with a gigantic iguana selling photo ops; parasailing; small children selling trays filled with tiny gourd animals with bobbing heads; delivery boats pulling in to replenish beer supplies; and, of course, the pie lady’s arrival. Horseback riding is available.

Hotel Lagunita

Hole up here in romantically rustic thatched-roof huts. Hilary Swank and Peter Coyote are among the celebs that vacation here.
