Taichung, Taiwan: Miyahara; things to do

Miyahara

No.20, Zhongshan Rd., Central Dist.

Located near the train station, th magnificent little shopping complex and emporium Miyahara is set within a fabulous old building that was originally an optical shop.  A popular ice cream shop that is reputed to have the best ice cream in town operates at one end and seems always to have a long line.

Another shop offers a large selection of teas.

But Miyahara--specializing in pineapple cakes and other goodies such as seed candies and chocolate-dipped dried fruits--is the main attraction and piece de resistance.  The ceiling is high, the butterflies-and-flowers packaging is exquisite, and the prices are reasonable.  It is the perfect place to select gifts and souvenirs to take home.

  1. Wonderful photos, Carole. I've not been to Taiwan, but may get there some day. I've shied away because of the impending crowds.

    1. Actually, crowds aren't so bad in Taiwan. Nothing like in the big cities of China.

  2. The interior of Miyahara is beautiful. All the old wood and high displays make the place look really rich. The ice cream sundae looks fabulous too...and gigantic! Hadn't thought about visiting Taiwan as I didn't know much about it. So far, much nicer looking than the places I've seen (in pictures) in mainland China.

  3. We just enjoyed our first trip to Taiwan, but spent all our limited time in Taipei. Loved it, but this is inspiring a visit to other parts of the land.

  4. That ice cream sundae looks spectacular but the beautiful woodwork at Miyahara is almost as eye-catching!
