Opened in 1927, Caffe Reggio is America’s first cafe.  And the very first American cappuccino was made here—the magnificent 1902 machine full of spiggots and spouts is on display.  Nowadays you can get the usual coffee house drinks as well as a personal favorite—an Italian frappe monte-rosa (cherry iced frappe) made better yet with an additional shot of chocolate--and also salads, sandwiches, shakes, and sweets.  More favorite drinks include a lavender latte, a minty mocha iced or hot, and lavender or rose lemonade.  More than 80 works of art adorn the cafe, including an 18th-century Francesco the Younger titled “The Celebration of El Cid,” and right across the street is a three-story brownstone where Louisa May Alcott--the author of “Little Women,” once lived.   Many scenes in the vintage 1950s bohemian movie starring Shelly Winters, Next Stop, Greenwich Village, were filmed here.

Sights to See: Yelapa, Mexico

the Pie Lady of Yelapa, Mexico

Yelapa

45 min. from Puerto Vallarta by boat. $11/one-way by water taxi.

In the tiny seaside village of Yelapa donkeys cart things. It has no cars, and electricity didn’t arrive until 2001. But perhaps the town’s biggest claim to fame is pie, sold by a lady who strolls the beach balancing the pie plate on her head, stopping to serve out big wedges of banana and coconut cream to those who simply cannot resist. After disembarking the water taxi into the sea's warm water, plop in a plastic lounge chair right at the water’s edge and settle in for a few hours of watching the amazing show unfold in front of you—-a local man with a gigantic iguana selling photo ops; parasailing; small children selling trays filled with tiny gourd animals with bobbing heads; delivery boats pulling in to replenish beer supplies; and, of course, the pie lady’s arrival. Horseback riding is available.

Hotel Lagunita

Hole up here in romantically rustic thatched-roof huts. Hilary Swank and Peter Coyote are among the celebs that vacation here.

NYC: Scott's Pizza Tours; things to do

Scott's Pizza Tours

244 Fifth Ave, S-260, 908-337-7702. Walking tour $33, bus tour $55.

Pizza enthusiast Scott Wiener says, “I don’t even like to call it a tour—it’s more a support group for pizzaholics.” He travels with a messenger bag stuffed like a Chicago deepdish with books and dog-earred brochures that he pulls out for illustration. His informative tour takes you behind the scenes of New York pizza, with plenty of history—he’ll tell you more than you ever knew you didn’t know about pizza--and massive and messy slices aplenty to taste, too. The three-hour walking tour includes a sampling at New York's oldest pizzeria, as well as at several more super popular spots, while the four-and-a-half-hour weekend bus tour takes the group to other boroughs, too.

Chiang Mai, Thailand: Tiger Kingdom; things to do

man lays with tiger at Tiger Kingdom in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Tiger Kingdom in Chiang Mai

51/1 moo 7 rimtai, Mae-rim, 053-860704. Daily 9-6.

At Tiger Kingdom I was surprised by the docile tigers that allowed people to lay their heads on their butts for pictures (it’s claimed this is the only place in the world where you can get in the enclosures with the tigers and do this). A fish pedicure is available in the lobby. Surprisingly, the restaurant buffet here is exceptional.
